Thaksin government overthrown in coup - September 19, 2009

September 19, 2006 - What has happened: From New York, Prime Minister Thaksin made an announcement on Thai TV declaring a state of emergency and recalling Commander-in-Chief Sonthi from the deep south. This was, in effect, firing him. At about the same time, the military under Gen. Sonthi staged a counter-coup, cancelled Thaksin's state of emergency, and took control of key areas in Bangkok.
